Tips on how to practice and perform

What I practice and play depends greatly on what my teacher gives me to practice and also what I want to play. I really don’t focus on one genre because that would be boring in my opinion, so that’s why I like to mix things up and play different kind of songs. That’s a good tip to not get burnt out of music and playing. For example on one lesson I could play classical music and then the next one I could be playing jazz or something completely different. That also helps you to improve on different parts of your skills and playing which is perfect for getting better at playing.

Controlling your nerves is a key thing to not failing your performance. I have done it once and because I was stressing I completely failed the whole song and it was so bad that I could clearly see that everyone noticed how bad I screwed up the performance. So by believing in yourself and relaxing before playing can really have a big impact. Also listening to others is the most important thing while playing with other people, for example in a band.

But all in all I love performing and I think it’s nice to show people what you have learnt and can play and also see how much you have improved. I have performed about 25 times and every time I notice that I have improved in some way or another. Sadly I can’t show my performance of Bohemian Rhapsody because the free version of this website doesn’t allow videos.

Music and me

Music means a lot to me. It’s not a hobby for me, it’s an important part of my life and it gives me a way to express myself and my emotions. I love practicing new songs because it’s a nice pastime and it also gives me a feeling of success and I also improve in it by playing everyday. I wish I could say the same about my singing skills…

Improvising is probably the biggest thing about why I love playing piano. On somedays I may feel sad and I just want to get rid of that feeling, then I just go sit next to my piano and just start playing whatever comes to my mind. Playing something happy on a good day or something super sad on the bad days really helps to get the mood better.

I usually practice about an hour everyday, that’s what I try to do, but sometimes there just isn’t time to do fun things. On those days I usually try to listen to random songs and just enjoy music in some other way. But when it comes to music I can be really picky about what suits my style and what I like to listen. Many people think I’m little bit weird because in my opinion there isn’t any good music been made nowadays so that’s why I love listening to old songs. For example one of the songs I love listening and playing is Simon & Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Water which is from 1970. So yeah I really love old classics and old songs in general.

Classical music is also something I’m greatly into and have played since the day I started playing. One of the songs I would really want to learn someday is Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, especially the 3rd movement which is very difficult.

Who I am

I am Mikael and this my blog about what I love about playing piano and music in general.

I love all kinds of different songs and genres but if I had to choose the best one, I would say the best song is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and pretty much all other Queen songs are my favorites. I have been playing the piano for 10 years now and I have learnt so many different songs from classical music to jazz.

My electric keyboard set up now

I got my first electric keyboard when I was 6. From that day on I knew this was something I wanted to do and so I started taking piano lessons at a conservatoire in Lahti, but later switched to a school called Hauskat Sävelet, which is a more friendly and relaxed environment to play in because it is done on the students own terms which is so much nicer to me. I have been playing there for 8 years now and have never regretted it.

Sadly on the day writing this I can’t show my real piano because I’m not living at home for sometime. I hope you enjoy reading this blog about my music filled life!
